The phenomenon of family violence is not new for our country. According to the latest studies every fourth woman in the republic of Moldova is a victim of family violence, weather it is physical, economical, sexual or psychological. The statistics of the Ministry of Interior shows that during the first seven months of 2009, the serious injuries, rapes and offences committed within the family are increasing. Violence takes place in families with different economic and social statuses, however most victims come from rural areas and from vulnerable families. Violence perpetuates through generations. Children, especially boys, copy the violent behaviour of their fathers and later on they become abusive husbands and parents as well. In addition to that, family violence in Moldova is often ignored by the society, being considered a private matter and a taboo for public discussions. It is quite difficult to detect, because it happens within the family and is less visible.
ZERO TOLERANCE towards domestic violence
Beginning with November 2009 in Moldova is taking place a major awareness raising campaign “A healthy family is a family without violence”, as part of an integrated and complex approach in tackling domestic violence. The Campaign aims at educating an attitude of zero tolerance towards domestic violence and promoting a new Trust Line for women who suffer from violence, 0 8008 8008, administered by the International Centre “La Strada”. UNFPA has the leading role in assisting financially and methodologically the Campaign.
