„Greetings to age” – action dedicated to the International Day of Older Persons organized in Chisinau

SNV30258The public action „ Greetings to age” dedicated to the International Day of Older Persons took place on October 01, 2011 at 11.00-14.00, in the square of the National Opera and Ballet Theatre. The event is part of the campaign „Age demands action” organized by the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family (MLSPF) in collaboration with HelpAge International, UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund and Joint Integrated Local Development Program (JILDP), implemented by UNDP and UN Women with the financial support of the Government of Sweden. It aims to raise awareness of the important role of aged people in society.

Within the event young volunteers, among which representatives of the MLSPF, heartedly offered greeting cards to elderly people in the streets of all the districts of the capital city. The young people also received cards to congratulate their grandparents, parents and the loved ones of old age.

Mrs. Valentine Buliga, Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family launched the event „ Greetings to age” in the center of the capital city, in the square of the National Opera and Ballet Theatre. The volunteers headed for other districts of Chisinau from there.

The action included a music concert offered by the Mix Military Orchestra of the Ministry of Defense, a photo exhibition reflecting the life of elderly people in Moldova and a fair of handicrafts made by older people.

At the same time, everybody interested had the chance to try his/her abilities and skills assisted by the craftsmen of the National Craftsmen Union of Moldova during a master class of jewelry manufacturing and flower arranging.  

HelpAge partner organizations who work with older people addressed congratulations with the International Day of Older Persons through poems and songs.

The event aimed at informing people about the International Day of Older Persons, at promoting the positive image of the elderly people in society and at making their voices heard.

During this week, the 68 people aged 100, who live in the Republic of Moldova, as well as 34 veterans – heroes of labor from across the country, have received with the assistance of „Poşta Moldovei” greeting cards signed by Mrs. Valentina Buliga, Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family.

The campaign „Age demands action” is initiated by HelpAge International in many countries. This year, Republic of Moldova takes part in the campaign along with 50 countries. The event is celebrated for the 5th time in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family (MLSPF) and UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund.

We live in the century of aging in which the number of people over 60 is increasing. At the same time, the category of older persons is one of the most vulnerable and socially excluded groups. The older persons represent 14.4 % of the total population of Moldova.
